Joe Student grew up on Long Island, New York playing with electronic circuits and stereo equipment. In the mid 1970s, he became enamored with the sound of electronic music groups such as Kraftwerk and Yellow Magic Orchestra and began composing electronic music and building synthesizer circuits.

In the early 1980s he released several self-produced cassettes of his compositions, most notably 1988's Songs For The Hearing Impaired and 1990's Popular Keyboard Made Unpopular. He has also recorded with indie rock band Table For 4 as keyboardist and producer.

He has created song parodies for radio stations and has been featured more than once on the nationally syndicated Dr. Demento show in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Mr. Student is the designer and principal developer of the GROUND:control loop-based MIDI sequencer software released by Alternote Music Systems in 1995, and has created proprietary analog sequencer circuits used in his recordings and performances.
